Portable AC rental providing temporary cooling this summer

Stay Cool with Portable AC Rentals

Here's a Guide to Staying Cool with a Portable AC Rental

Portable air conditioners are designed to cool a specific space, unlike an HVAC system which provides central air conditioning to cool your entire home. If you have multiple spaces (such as a master bedroom, home office or kids room, plus a living space to cool, you will need multiple units. But if and when your AC system breaks down this summer, a portable air conditioner can be your summer lifesaver!

Portable Air Conditioners cost between $300 for a small, low BTU unit and can take the edge off a hot room, but you get what you pay for. Don’t expect a lot. Good units that offer more cooling power run $500-600. The best, time-tested, proven reliable brands with max cooling capacity cost $700 - $900.

When you buy or rent a portable air conditioner, it is important to keep it running consistently. Here are some tips to keep your portable air conditioning unit working properly.

  1. Keep temperature set no lower than 70 degrees. Setting the unit at a lower temp will not make them work better, it could make them freeze up and stop running.
  2. Adjust fan speed to low fan or sleep mode at night if it’s comfortable. It will be much quieter while you sleep.
  3. Keep pets and small children away from the unit. They can accidently push buttons, disconnect hoses, cords or break a fan.
  4. Find the right spot away from high traffic areas. Once connected, do not move the unit. Moving it could result in the damage to the unit or cause the ventillation hose coming detached.
  5. Don’t plug the unit in on the same electrical circuit you have other high-energy use appliances, such as stoves, microwaves, toaster ovens… anything with a fan or that generates heat.

Units are self-contained and do not require any servicing, however, if your unit stops working for any reason, try these steps:

  • Cord Connection: Check the cord/outlet connection? Did it become unplugged?
  • Electrical: Did the unit trip a breaker? Check breaker box. If it continues to happen, an extension cord may be required to plug it into a different outlet/circuit
  • Full Water Tank: While it’s unlikely, if the unit needs to be drained of water, it will auto-shut off. You can drain the unit into a bowl, bucket, saucepan, etc.
  • Freeze: Did unit freeze up and stop working? Shut it off for 10 minutes and try again.

Common Problems

  • Window Adapter fell out of window; Can you replace and tape it
  • Ventillation Hose becomes detached; Can you reconnect it?
  • Unit is not blowing cold; Ensure there are no gaps in the venting kit that could compromise efficiency or let in hot air. Seal with duct tape/packing tape. Check the settings. Turn it off for one minute and turn it back on on default settings.
